The running of our club is governed by our Constitution, supported by our Standards of Behaviour

Our History

Goslings has its origins in 1976, as an informal gathering of gay swimmers on Mondays at the Oasis Pool in High Holborn. In 1982, the group succeeded in getting private hire of the Oasis on Thursdays, as part of the Gay Outdoor Club (GOC). In 1985, the swimming club became independent of GOC, and the name Goslings was adopted (as Gay Outdoor Swimming London-ings).

The vicious winter of 1986-7 caused the Oasis to close both of its pools, and the Goslings were instead offered use of the sports hall, and decided to play badminton. This proved popular and soon became a second club activity, and over time we expanded to the current number of club nights.

In April 2012, our swimmers rejoined GOC, and Goslings became a club focused exclusively on badminton.

F.A.Q.

Levels

As a guide, we use the standard badminton classifications used in LGBT international tournaments, as follows:

C-
Beginner: no prior experience, learning to execute and receive basic badminton strokes, e.g. low serve, smash, drop shots.

C+
Lower intermediate: good ability to execute and receive all badminton shots with some control; rudimentary use of tactics.

B-
Upper intermediate: strong and consistent ability to execute and receive all badminton shots, good control of the shuttle, solid tactics employed.

B+
Advanced: mastery of all shots, strong technical ability and control, advanced tactics employed.

A
County level: mastery of all shots, exceptional technical ability, advanced tactics employed.

Scoring

Games are played to 21 points, using the standard badminton scoring system.

Pegboard

All our doubles nights operate a pegboard system, to ensure everyone gets a fair number of games.

Capacity

Occasionally, our sessions are over-subscribed, so to ensure attendees get a decent number of games, we reserve the right to play games to 15 points rather than 21 and/or cap the numbers at a particular session.

Dress

All players are required to wear appropriate sports kit, including shoes with non-marking soles.
